An internationally recognized musician, Canadian timpanist and percussionist Alex Artale is currently the principal timpanist of the Boise Philharmonic. He has performed as guest principal timpanist with the Victoria Symphony, percussionist in the Toronto Symphony and is a regular substitute timpanist with the Windsor Symphony. Alex has performed under many esteemed conductors including Gianandrea Noseda, Michael Francis, Bramwell Tovey and Peter Oundjian. A native of Toronto Ontario, he received a BA from the University of Toronto in 2013 and a diploma with high distinction from the Glenn Gould School in 2016. Committed to ongoing learning, Alex engages in regular training with timpanists Jeremy Epp (Detroit Symphony), Jason Haaheim (Metropolitan Opera) and Don Liuzzi (Philadelphia Orchestra). When not practicing or performing, Alex can be found traveling, lusting for a wood/metalworking shop, making timpani mallets, and attempting to build his own percussion instruments. He enjoys tinkering with a vegetable garden in the tradition of his grandfather and is striving to become a good cook of Italian food like his grandmother.
