Cecilia Violetta Lopez grew up in Rupert, Idaho. She spent her youth hoeing sugar beets, picking rocks, and moving irrigation pipe. Her vocal career began with Mexican Mariachi songs her mother taught her while they worked together in the fields; and now she sparkles in starring roles in operas from California to New York. What a journey!

A review of her performance as Desdemona in Rossini’s Otello said, “Cecilia truly stole the production. She absolutely owned her show-stopping arias, displaying heartache so palpable that it was impossible to hold back tears.”

Cecilia opens with Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, a radiant contemporary tribute to J.S. Bach. This sublime jewel masterfully fuses Baroque technique with soulful Brazilian intimacy and rhythm. The effect is captivating, an unforgettable moment of transcendent beauty. She will also sing Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a poignant stream-of-consciousness retrospective on his blissful life as an innocent child in his hometown.

Rounding out the program are Barber’s Adagio for Strings, one of the most ethereal and elegiac pieces in the classical repertoire; Osvaldo Golijov’s tango dance Last Round; and Aaron Copland’s Three Latin Sketches, the alluring sounds of Mexico and Central and South America.
