MODEST  MUSSORGSKY (arr. Ravel)
Pictures at an Exhibition

We’re kicking off the 23|24 season with the world premiere of local Boise composer Jim Cockey’s new work, Fanfare of Hope and Freedom.

Then hear some of classical music’s most iconic themes. From its thunderous first four notes, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto declares itself a work of high drama and passion. Prepare to be swept off your feet when Weiyin Chen* takes the stage for this Romantic tour-de-force.

We’ll finish the concert with an epic promenade through a musical gallery with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. These eclectic scenes are based on an actual art exhibition by Mussorgsky’s friend, Viktor Hartmann. The music will transport you from eerie Parisian catacombs, through a lighthearted ballet of chicks in their shells, to the resplendent Great Gates of Kiev. Enjoy as these paintings leap off the page with a dazzling display of instrumental color.

NEW THIS SEASON: Pre-Concert Talks will be at the matinee and evening performances.
Join Musicologist Bradley Berg and Music Director Eric Garcia (and special guests) as they guide you through the music you are about to hear, providing an enlightening look at the repertoire and composers before the performance begins. Bring your questions! Please gather inside the concert hall by the stage.

Matinee Pre-Concert Talk starts at 11:45 am
Evening Pre-Concert Talk starts at 6:15 pm
